Lake Eufaula  – Oklahoma’s “Gentle Giant”

Lake Eufaula, 15th largest in the United States and known as the "Gentle-Giant," has over 600 miles of shoreline and 102,000 surface acres of water. It is located primarily in McIntosh and Pittsburg counties with a small portion in Haskell and Okmulgee counties. It is Oklahoma’s largest human-made lake and was completed in 1964 for flood control, water supply, hydroelectric power, and recreation. The lake’s maximum depth is eighty-seven feet, and the mean depth is about twenty-three feet. The major sources are the waters of the Canadian, North Canadian, and Deep Fork rivers.

Lake Eufaula is a fabulous tourist and resort attraction offering a variety of recreational opportunities for everyone. The shoreline ranges from vast expanses of sandy beaches to rocky bluffs. Golfing, hunting, hiking, boating, water-skiing, camping, and swimming are among the many activities that attract visitors to the area.

With fishing available on the lake year round, spring and fall are the most beautiful time of year to fish because of the spectacular scenery of Southeast Oklahoma. The lake boasts such fish as striped bass, largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, catfish, walleye, and numerous sunfish.

The lake has two state parks, numerous private campgrounds and twenty U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed recreation areas. The nearby by towns of Eufaula, Krebs, Checotah, Canadian, and McAlester benefit from an estimated two million lake visitors, who each year spend around $32 million.

Over 250 housing developments with lake homes are located in close proximity to the shoreline. Most of these areas are within walking distance to the lake. Many offer public boat ramp access within the development. Mowing and boat dock permits allow property owners to mow government property below their lots and place private boat docks within walking distance of their property.

Visitors to Eufaula Lake should plan to take advantage of the opportunity to sight see in the historic towns of Eufaula and Checotah, where many antique shops and unique restaurants offer something for everyone. Other points of interest include the towns of McAlester and Krebs, where Italian restaurants are known world-wide.

Visitors in the fall will be treated to a collage of colors as the surrounding hills provide unparalleled beauty of fall foliage.
